Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is achieved only if the client is happy to be induced into a trance state. Only the client can hypnotise themselves - the hypnotherapist is just a facilitator. The trance state in hypnotherapy can be described as a deep state of relaxation, yet senses are enhanced by around 30%. This means the myth of it being a sleep-like state can be dispelled. With this in mind, I can assure you that you will not blurt out all your secrets or do anything against your will.

When in a hypnotherapy trance state (which is the same as just before and just coming out of sleep, which we all do every day), the hypnotherapist can make positive suggestions to help re-program faulty coping mechanisms, which have been learned in the past, replacing them with ones more beneficial for the client.

It is important to give individualised therapy with the client's best interests central at all times. This is why I offer a free initial consultation, so that I can then plan your therapy to make sure you receive the best possible individualised care. I will discuss my impressions and whether Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture or HypnoAcupuncture would be the most efficacious approach. Your input will be valued at this stage and throughout your treatment.

The impact of chronic pain on people's lives varies from minor restrictions to complete loss of independence. Chronic pain can be difficult to manage conventionally because of its complex nature and poor response to medical management.

There is no clear definition for chronic pain but it can be described as pain which persists for longer than 12 weeks despite adequate time for healing. Conditions such as low back pain and osteoarthritis can be included in the list as can chronic daily headache.

It is not simply a physical problem. It is often associated with severe and extensive psychological, social and economic factors. Apart from poor general physical health and disability, there may also be depression, unemployment, and family stress. Many of these factors interact, and the whole picture needs to be considered when managing individual patients. This is why a complimentary therapy approach to chronic pain is ideal. A compassionate, patient-centred approach to assessment and management of chronic pain is likely to improve the chances of a successful outcome.

Carolyn will take a full history and negotiate an individual management plan that will work for you, taking into consideration all the possible contributing factors to the pain.

Migraine is a condition that causes attacks (episodes) of headaches. Other symptoms such as feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting) are also common. Between migraine attacks, the symptoms go completely.

Migraine is common. About 1 in 4 women and about 1 in 12 men develop migraine at some point in their lives. It most commonly first starts in childhood or as a young adult. Some people have frequent attacks - sometimes several a week. Others have attacks only now and then. Some people may go for years between attacks. In some people, the migraine attacks stop in later adult life. However, in some cases the attacks continue (persist) throughout life. It is thought that there are certain triggers that cause the attacks; one of the triggers can be stress.

NICE guidelines (2012) suggest that acupuncture is a valid complimentary therapy for migraine, always after a diagnosis from an appropriate healthcare professional and in conjunction with conventional medical interventions. Because stress and anxiety can be a trigger, adding some relaxation hypnotherapy whilst the needles are in place can help enhance the effects of the needles - it is also a very pleasant experience.

Picture of Sinuses

The sinuses are small, air-filled spaces inside the cheekbones and forehead. They make some mucus which drains into the nose through small channels.

Sinusitis means inflammation of a sinus. Most bouts of sinusitis are caused by an infection. The cheekbone (maxillary) sinuses are the most commonly affected.

Acute sinusitis means that the infection develops quickly (over a few days) and lasts a short time. Many cases of acute sinusitis last a week or so but it is not unusual for it to last 2-3 weeks (that is, longer than most colds). Sometimes it lasts longer. Sinusitis is said to be acute if it lasts from 4-30 days and subacute if it lasts from 4-12 weeks. A mild bout of acute sinusitis is common and many people will have some degree of sinusitis with a cold. Severe acute sinusitis is uncommon. Most people only ever have one or two bouts of acute sinusitis in their life. However, some people have repeated (recurring) bouts of acute sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis means that a sinusitis becomes persistent and lasts for longer than 12 weeks. Acupuncture, combined with your GP's management plan can help alleviate the disruptive symptoms of sinusitis.

Acupuncture is a wonderful therapy for regulating hormones and so re-establishing balance to your system. Problems such as period pains, cyclical migraine, irregular periods and pelvic pain can be alleviated. Of course, there should always be a diagnosis first from your GP to ensure there are no pathological reasons for the problems.

Often, following extensive tests, there can be no medical explanation for infertility. The term 'psychological contraception' can be used to explain the way the mind and body work to prevent conception, for some unknown reason, in one or both partners. This is where hypnotherapy and acupuncture combined can have wonderful positive effects. The end result, of course, a beautiful baby. The first thing the couple needs to do is to stop 'trying' and get back to enjoying a stress-free, loving relationship. No more kits, temperature taking and test strips, no more waiting for the right time. You will be amazed how many couples have conceived after following this advice and after only one or two treatments, sometimes. It really is a powerful therapy in this field.

As well as hypnotherapy being used successfully for hypnobirthing, acupuncture and hypnoacupuncture can be effective in the alleviation of pregnancy related problems such as pelvic girdle pain (SPD), low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, rhinitis, and of course the morning sickness that can be so debilitating in the first trimester. Breach presentation can also be turned round using acupuncture and moxibustion, adding hypnotherapy makes it even more powerful. Acupuncture and hypnacupuncture can also be used to induce the birth when the 40 weeks gestation has been reached. This therapy is ideal in pregnancy, no chemicals are involved so it is completely safe for mother and baby and has no major side effects.

Conception, pregnancy and birthing, nothing could be more natural, that's what females are designed to do.

In this age of technology we tend to want to medicalise even the most natural life events. Hypnobirthing gives you and your partner the tools required to have a totally natural birthing experience. Of course your midwife and obstetrician and GP are irreplaceable and key to your natural birthing plan. Hypnobirthing aims to work with your healthcare professionals to give you the best experience of child birth possible. The hypnotherapist is an addition to the team only, not being trained in obstetrics but experienced in teaching hypnobirthing techniques.

So if you and your birthing partner are wanting natural pain control as opposed to medication and a relaxed and natural, enjoyable first introduction to your child, then you have chosen wisely, please read on.

Lets face it, this is going to be one of the most memorable, exciting, life changing milestones that you are going to experience, you deserve to be in control of every cherished minute of this very personal event.

The individualised hypnobirthing plan begins at around thirty to thirty-two weeks gestation and includes six, one hour, weekly sessions to include free, personalised CD's in order to practice your new skills and to listen to in prelabour and labour itself. Your birthing partner is required to attend one of them in order to understand how the plan will work, they are more than welcome to attend every session.

After the arrival of your precious little one, a free relaxation session is offered with mother and baby to ensure breathing is in tune and strengthen relaxation techniques and bonding. The hypnotherapist finds these sessions rewarding as she gets to cuddle baby!

You deserve the best, give me a call, I will be happy to arrange a free initial consultation to tell you more.

Hypnotherapy is such an appropriate therapy for children as they already have a wonderful imaginative brain and use imagery and play to experience the world. This play and imagination can be channelled and focused in a therapeutic way to help them alleviate their problems, in a way they understand. It is very much individualised, using the child's language and view of the world so that they can relate to this. Children tend to grow out of phobias, but if this is impacting on their life, then hypnotherapy is an effective way to help with this. Bed wetting or nocturnal enuresis can have a terrible effect on a child's self-esteem. Hypnotherapy can help and is fun too. Other problems that can be treated are generalised anxiety, exam stress, insomnia, separation anxiety, eating problems, low self-esteem, sports performance enhancement, exam success, procrastination, nail biting, hair pulling, to name but a few, the list goes on and on.

Depression is not just having a couple of down days because someone has upset you at work. Depression is feeling low in mood for at least two weeks, lack of pleasure in doing things, not looking forward to the future, poor sleep, tearfulness, anger, irritation, a feeling of detachment from society, poor appetite or overeating are just a few of the classic symptoms; it just feels like a spiralling down into a big dark hole with no sign of any ladders to help you out. There are lots of reasons why people get depressed (exogenous depression), sometimes there are no reasons (endogenous depression) and this is even harder for the individual to understand - they have every reason to be happy and yet they aren't and have no control over it. We can work with whatever the reason to help alleviate the debilitating symptoms and get the client back to normality, assisting the client to take control again and empowering them to take charge of their thoughts again. It can be life changing for the client in some cases and rewarding for the therapist.

Fear is justified and a natural response to danger, if we have no fear the world would be a dangerous place and we would not last too long either! Irrational fear is debilitating, it causes avoidance behaviours and hence self exclusion from certain activities that should bring joy or are essential for health care. Different to fear is phobia, this is distinguished from fear by the physiological changes in the body of the phobic. Palpitations, sweating, increased heart rate, shallow, short breaths, the body goes into 'fight or flight' mode following the release of excessive adrenalin into the blood stream, the body and mind really think that the individual is in actual danger.

Hypnotherapy can help change the mindset, convincing the self-conscious that this is no longer a useful response and selling all the benefits to be gained from adopting a more useful behaviour and response. In essence the unwanted behaviour is learned behaviour, it can be unlearned and it works!

Fear of flying, spider phobias and fear, needle phobias and fears, dog phobias are the most common presentations although I have treated adults who have a restricted diet due to fear or dislike of most solid foods.

If you have never had a panic attack then you are lucky. If you have, you will know what it feels like to have intense anxiety to a point where it can stop you in your tracks, even put a halt on normal daily life, preventing going to work or talking to anyone, even going out to the shops. Hypnotherapy can really help, acupuncture combined with hypnotherapy can also be beneficial for some people. Anxiety is the body's natural response to a perceived danger. When anxious, the person doesn't know it but they hyperventilate, taking shallow, short breaths. This changes the pH in the blood stream and sends messages to the adrenal glands that the individual must be in danger and either needs to escape the danger or stand up and fight it. The adrenal glands flood the body with adrenalin and so the anxiety cycle begins.

This response can be 'unlearned' simply by teaching the client breathing exercises and using positive suggestion and techniques to bring about calm and relaxation at any given time. It is simple but very effective. The aim is to teach self-hypnosis so that the client can take full control and is empowered to self care.

Can't get off to sleep, wake early, not sleeping hardly at all, fitful, restless sleep all effect a person's daily life adversely. When sleep deprived, everything looks worse and more difficult to handle, the person becomes intolerant of even little irritations and things get out of hand in a downward spiral. We all need a good night's sleep, some more than others - teenagers for example. Some people have a distorted view of how much sleep they need and think they have insomnia if they do not get twelve hours of undisturbed sleep a night. This is unfounded. Some people get by on six hours, eight hours is about average but we all vary. Insomnia is when a person's normal pattern of sleep is disturbed and disrupted. Hypnotherapy can't help with a newborn baby disturbing sleep, it's essential you wake for that! Although hypnobirthing moms say Carolyn's relaxation audio track really helps with a restless baby!

Hypnotherapy can help by teaching the client how to relax and use various techniques to get off to sleep and stay asleep, waking refreshed and revitalised. Of course issues that have caused the sleep disturbance may become apparent in therapy; these can be dealt with appropriately as they arise.

IBS is thought to be as devastating to psychological health as heart disease and diabetes. The effects of IBS on an individual are often under recognised by health professionals. If you've not suffered from it, then it is hard to understand how debilitating it can be. There is, as yet, no scientific test to diagnose IBS; it is an umbrella term for gut symptoms that show no abnormality on current diagnostic investigations. Diagnosis is made on clinical grounds only, this is why it is called a syndrome. People get abdominal pain with either loose stools or sometimes constipation; some people have a mixture of all three. It is important to get a diagnosis from a health care professional and not to self diagnose.

It is common for people to start restricting their diet, thinking that a certain food has 'set off' their IBS. This escalates as it becomes apparent to the individual that all food is 'setting it off'. This is not the case, in most instances there is no food intolerance involved, although some people find that leaving out dairy or wheat can help a little.

Sufferers often find they plan their lives around 'their' IBS, they take ownership of it. They plan where the nearest toilet will be, and just won't go to places where there is no quick access to a toilet. They also restrict their social lives, having to dash to the toilet in front of strangers and using a strange toilet or a public one is embarrassing, especially for bowel movements. This then causes more stress and more restrictions on daily activities. The main trigger for IBS, of course, is stress.

Hypnotherapy helps the individual deal with the cause of their stress, teaching them better ways of managing this, utilising guided imagery and relaxation.

One impressive success story is regarding a lady who had suffered from IBS for around 40 years; she knew the initiating cause and could articulate it well. She was cured in one session. Changed her life.

Let's guess. You have done the patches, the gum, cold turkey even, perhaps those funny e-cigs that are all the rage, and yet you are still a slave to the cigarette. It has you in its clutches. Ask any smoker, they do not want to smoke, it costs a small fortune, but they just struggle to stop.

Struggle no more. Hypnotherapy can help in one session. Just think of all the things you can afford to buy instead of watching it all go up in smoke. Think of the health benefits, not to mention smelling sweeter too!

The best time to stop is when you are ready, not when someone else is forcing you to do so, you have to want to stop - for your benefit, not anyone else's. If this sounds like you then give me a call. I will be happy to arrange a free initial consultation to plan a start for your new and healthy future.

We don't all fit in to neat little diagnoses, sometimes we have individualised thoughts feelings and emotions that we would like to deal with. If this is you, then hypnotherapy can help, the therapy is developed and negotiated with your individual needs in mind. Sometimes labels are not helpful, we just need to move on and enjoy life. After all, we only get one chance at it.

This is a fun way to relax away the strains and stresses with a group of friends or colleagues. I can arrange to come to your place of work or to your home and plan a wonderfully enjoyable event with the benefit of pampering relaxation and stress relief.

I also do past life regression parties - just for fun of course, they can be very interesting. You don't have to tell the group about your experience, I ask everyone to write down their answers for their personal interest only after the regression session. You can then go and research it at your leisure - we get quite surprising results!

I am offering free events for groups of twelve or more NHS workers, something dear to my heart, I know how stressful it is to work in this environment - I have first hand experience - and plenty of it!

So if you are a group of friends wanting specific therapy or even just stress relief this would work wonderfully for you as it spreads the cost.

Or perhaps a group of stressed NHS work colleagues - if you have a venue then I will come to your rescue!

Perhaps you are a leader or a manager who would like to arrange some therapeutic 'time out' for your hard working and dedicated team

Perhaps you are interested in past life regression, perhaps you are not sure, then how better to dispel or prove the theory than in an enjoyable friendly and fun group setting - just for fun of course!

I am always happy to discuss your group needs, just call and we can plan a meeting to arrange your ideal group session.

If you have not seen your issue explained in the other sections, then this one is for you. Call in, drop an email, text or phone me.
